How Dreams Can Aid in Making Decisions
Often people become interested in dreamwork when they are faced with a difficult dilemma of choice. And such seekers sincerely hope that dreams will give them the right answer as to what to choose and what decision to make.
And while dreams do guide a person through the shortest path to solving problems, as true spiritual guides they place the individual’s free will above all else and will therefore never clearly identify the “right choice”.
Yes, they will provide more profound and extensive information about the alternative solutions, but the decision to choose a particular one must be made by the dreamer himself, in the waking state.
This may disappoint those who seek quick and easy ways, but this is the essence of the life path of every incarnated person in the third density, the main motive of which is free choice.
Although the dreamer must make the choice on his or her own, dreams can provide invaluable assistance in this process. Most importantly, they will bring to the surface of the conscious mind all those doubts, hopes, fears, hidden motives, etc. that the dreamer may have about each of the options of the upcoming choice that he or she may not be consciously aware of. And it is only the full awareness of what is going on in one’s inner world that will allow one to make a conscious decision, taking into account all the truly significant pros and cons, and not just those that lie on the surface of everyday perception.
Here is a recent example from my own practice.
Generally speaking, for the last 7 years I have been working steadily towards goal “A”. But in the last year another goal “B” came into sight, and in fact it was suggested to me through dreams. And although it was not an easy decision to leave “A” in favor of “B”, I took it as a matter of course, as something more “right”, more useful. So I started to move more and more towards goal “B” without realizing the depth of the unresolved inner conflict that was created in the process.
Of course, the dreams did not overlook this knot that needed to be untied. They began to show me scenarios in which I was angry that someone had “written my biography” when I considered it to be my private matter. These dreams were also symbolic images of what I wanted to accomplish in my life. Such images were not difficult to interpret – they represented a path to my former goal “A”.
I took these dreams seriously, for they spoke an actual truth that was not difficult to uncover: the decision to abandon goal “A” and not accomplish all that I had planned within its framework was indeed a bit sad.
Therefore, under the influence of these dreams, I made an attempt to pursue their theme (i.e., to try to return to goal “A”) because it was presented in the dreams as something really important to me. But this decision did not last more than a day. Observing myself, I realized that such a change of course didn’t make me happier on the soul level. On the contrary, the kind of work I was doing in “A” field, which used to inspire and delight me, suddenly began to seem like a burden to me. In addition, I began to feel and identify the very anger that was represented in the dream as anger at the fact that someone had “written my biography,” i.e., decided my future. It turned out that this anger referred to the choice between “A” and “B” made under the influence of the dreams, rather than as a result of my own conscious seeking.
Such was the intricacy of the logical connection between the dreams I was shown and the feelings they evoked. However, the essence of such guidance, assistance in choosing one’s path forward, is quite obvious. As it turned out, my initial choice between “A” and “B” was not a 100% independent decision: this decision came to me in a bypath, so to speak, and I simply agreed to it.
In this case, however, mere agreement was obviously not enough. It was necessary to explore the full depth of my motivation. So the dreams brought me back to path “A” so that, being there again, I could listen more closely to my feelings and make my own independent, conscious and fully informed choice, even if it seemed on the surface to go against the feelings and thoughts that were presented as motivating in the dream.
This example may seem too complicated for some to fully understand what happened, but that’s not the point. The main idea I was trying to convey is that dreams are very useful in making decisions and need to be listened to. However, this should not be done for the purpose of looking for the right decision in them, but for the purpose of getting to know yourself from all angles. And only then, based on a complete picture of what is going on in your own inner world, will it be possible to make the most informed decision – one that is less likely to cause regret in the future because it was made CONSCIOUSLY, taking into account all the essential pros and cons.
